What: SoutheastCon is an annual IEEE Region 3 Technical, Professional, and Student Conference. As the premier conference for the IEEE Region that encompasses the Southeastern United States and includes the states of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, areas of Indiana, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and the country of Jamaica, it brings Electrical and Computer Engineering, Computer Science professionals, faculty and students to share the latest information through technical sessions, tutorials, professional development sessions, and exhibits. It is the most influential conference in Region 3 for promoting awareness of the technical contributions made by our profession to the advancement of engineering science and to the community which ties into our theme this year, “Engineers Making the World a Better Place.” Attendance and technical program participation from areas outside IEEE Region 3 is welcomed and encouraged.

SoutheastCon is hosted annually by IEEE Region 3, and consists of three concurrent programs. One part is a professional technical paper conference of general topic technical papers featuring authors from around the globe. A second part is a Region 3 administrative meeting of IEEE volunteers that will gather to discuss, develop, and implement both new and existing initiatives to better serve the region’s IEEE members. The third aspect of the conference focuses on the region’s IEEE student branches from universities throughout Region 3. It involves a paper competition, a software competition, a hardware robotic competition, a website design competition, and a T-shirt design competition. These competitions attract some of the best and brightest engineering and computer science students from across the Southeast and Jamaica.
In addition to these three parts, SoutheastCon 2009 will also offer several tutorials as continuing education opportunities. The first joint MPAC (Member Professional Awareness Conference)/SPAC (Student Professional Awareness Conference) in Region 3 will also be offered to support professional development for both our professionals and our students, and will offer opportunities to interact, learn, and mentor. The Atlanta Section of the IEEE and the Georgia Tech IEEE Student Branch are co-hosting SoutheastCon 2009. This event is entirely organized and run by volunteers. Its success is due to their dedication. You do not have to be a member of IEEE to participate or attend SoutheastCon 2009. However, we do encourage you to investigate the benefits of IEEE membership.
